Nexxim Design Examples > Perform an Oscillator Analysis1. To enable oscillator analysis, an oscillator probe has been added to the schematic above the bipolar transistor Q1. Here is that portion of the schematic : Click on the oscillator probe to display its properties on the Param Values tab of the Properties window. The Param Values tab for the oscillator probe should have the values shown here: Parameter A is set to 0.001. Parameter A is the initial voltage used for the initial guess at the oscillating frequency. Press the Enter key to move to the next parameter. Parameter FREQ is set to local variable initial_freq. The initial value is 2 Mhz as shown above. Click OK to close the Properties dialog. 2. Select the Project tab in the Project window. Expand the Analysis icon in the Project window, right-click the Oscillator_test solution setup. 3. The Oscillator Analysis dialog opens: Oscillator_test is the name of the setup. 31 is the Max. Harmonic Number. This specifies the highest harmonic to use in the harmonic balance calculations that underlie the oscillator analysis. Variable initial_freq is the F1 Initial Guess. The local variable sets the initial frequency estimate for both the oscillator probe and the analysis setup: Click OK to close the Oscillator Analysis dialog. 4. Expand the Analysis icon in the Project window, right-click the Oscillator_test solution setup, and select Analyze from the menu. The oscillator analysis runs. The Progress window displays a red line to show the progress of the analysis. 5. When the analysis is finished, Nexxim displays the result in the Message window: The analysis messages provide information about the simulation. The analysis:dc messages show the DC analysis phase. The next analysis:osc messages (and the maxstep messages) follow the transient analysis as Nexxim computes an initial guess for the oscillation frequency (2.28218 MHz). The next analysis:osc messages show Nexxim trying alternate locations for the probe. If an analysis fail, Nexxim automatically reruns the analysis after relocating the probe to an alternative location. The final analysis:osc messages show successful completion of the oscillator analysis, with the final oscillating frequency, 2.28274 MHz, and the simulation times.
