Magnetostatic Sources

Several different magnetostatic source types are available for the magnetostatic field solver.

 

Current or voltage driven Coil

Current or voltage coils with constant profile can be defined via a path curve and a profile curve that is swept along the path.

A peak current or voltage value corresponding to one turn as well as the total number of turns and the Ohmic resistance can be specified.

The phase value will be ignored by the magnetostatic solver.

Current Path &

Coil Segment

In magnetostatic field problems, closed and non-closed current paths find application to simulate the idealization of a thin conductor with given current.

A non-closed current path can be used to prescribe the total current in a touching PEC solid.

To create a current path an appropriate curve path has to be defined before.

A coil segment definition consists of a path- and a profile-curve.

In order to define a solvable magnetostatic problem each connected set of current paths and conductive domains must form a closed circuit. In particular current paths must start and end in PEC solids or on electric boundaries or on conductive domains with imported stationary current fields.

Permanent Magnet

Permanent magnets can be defined on solids with Normal material properties. There are two magnetization types available.

The constant type allows for the specification of a magnetization axis. The remanence flux density value corresponds to the norm of the specified magnetization vector. The eventually computed vector field will point into the direction of this vector.

For the radial type a local cylindric coordinate system has to be specified via the location of its local z-axis and origin. The corresponding magnetic field will then be circularly symmetric with respect to that origin and orthogonal to the local z-axis. The remanence flux density has to be prescribed separately for radial magnets.

 

Magnetic Source Field

Via the Solve menu it is possible to prescribe a magnetic source field which is constant throughout the entire calculation domain pointing into the direction of a specified field vector.

This feature is currently available only for the hexahedral solver.

 

Stationary Current Field

To use a stationary current field as a source for the magnetostatic field solver, an appropriate check box has to be activated in the Magnetostatic Solver Parameters dialog box. Then a stationary current field computation will be performed beforehand.

Please note that current loops have to be closed to generate a solvable problem in the magnetostatic context (otherwise Ampere's Law is violated). Such a loop can consist of current wires, current fields and PEC domains.
