System Simulator > Multi-Tone Frequency Domain AnalysisMulti-tone frequency domain analysis is applicable only to electrical systems composed of linear and nonlinear electrical (frequency based) elements. Systems containing functional (time based) elements may not be analyzed in the frequency domain. The Multi-tone frequency domain analysis is capable of predicting inter-modulation distortion (IMD) or harmonics generated by nonlinear elements (e.g., amplifiers and mixers) within the system. This frequency domain analysis is applicable to general multi-channel nonlinear electrical topologies like the one shown in Figure 1 above. Such a topology is typically composed of multi-port and two-port linear passive elements and two-port linear and nonlinear active elements. The multi-port system can be excited from any set of external ports, which is defined by the sources applied in the port definitions.
The topics for this section include: The Algorithm for Multi-tone Response Evaluation of Nonlinear Systems IMD Calculations for Nonlinear Two-port Elements Time Representation of a Bandpass Envelope Multitone RF Signal IMD calculations for Mixers with MIXERSPURS data tables Multi-Tone Frequency Domain Measurements Topology Restrictions for the Multi-tone Domain Assumptions Made for the Multi-tone Frequency Domain Measurements
