Plane Waves

A plane wave propagates in one direction and is uniform in the directions perpendicular to its propagation direction. The angle at which the plane wave impacts the device is known as the angle of incidence.

• The RCS computation includes both vertical (TM – Transverse Magnetic) and horizontal (TE – Transverse Electric) incident waves. For every type of incident wave, both vertical and horizontal scattered waves are computed.

• The incident plane wave direction and the observed direction are specified in terms of an azimuthal angle (q) and a scan angle (f). The azimuthal angle is the angle measured from the z-axis, which is the axis perpendicular to the plane of the work space, and must be from 0 to less than 180 degrees. The scan angle is the angle measured from the x-axis and can be from 0 to 360 degrees.

• In Designer, V implies a TM-polarized incident wave and H implies a TE-polarized wave. With a TM-polarized wave, in an HH case when phi = 0, the H field is in the phi direction (i.e., +y direction), and the E field is in the –theta direction (dashed line below).

 

 

• Conversely, with a TE-polarized wave, in an HH case when phi = 0, the E field is in the phi direction (+y direction), and the H field is in the +theta direction (dashed line below).
