Axial Ratio

Axial ratio is defined as the ratio of the electric field component along the major axis (of the figure traced by the instantaneous electric field vector) to the component along the minor axis.

Designer calculates the axial ratio by computing the electric field vector at a point in space and taking the ratio of the vector’s components that lie in the plane perpendicular to the direction of radiation.

By definition, the axial ratio has the following range: , where an axial ratio of 1 indicates that the electric field is circularly polarized and an axial ratio of infinity indicates that the electric field is linearly polarized.
