Run Transient and Harmonic Balance Analyses

We want to examine the start-up and steady-state behavior of the mixer. Transient analysis is the time domain simulation of the mixer. We need to run transient only to analyze the start-up period—the first few cycles of the carrier. Harmonic balance analysis reveals the spectral output of the mixer in steady state, and can also provide a time-domain view of the start-up behavior.

After the simulations have been set up, we must assign the two Port 1 power sources to the analyses.

To set up the Transient analysis:

1. In the Project window, expand the Circuitn folder, right-click on the Analysis folder, and select Add Nexxim Solution Setup. Continue to expand the menu and select Transient Analysis:

2. The Transient Analysis setup dialog opens.

3. Change Stop to 60 ns. Step and Accuracy should remain as shown.

4. Click OK to close the Transient Analysis setup dialog.

To set up the Harmonic Balance analysis:

1. In the Project window, expand the Circuitn folder, right-click on the Analysis folder, and select Add Nexxim Solution Setup. Continue to expand the menu and select Harmonic Balance (N-Tone).

2. The Harmonic Balance Analysis, N-Tone setup dialog opens.

3. Click on the Edit Tones/maxk button. The Edit Tones/Max Harmonic number dialog opens:

4. Change No of Tones to 2. The panel shows the two tones as F1 and F2.

5. Set the Value of F1 to FLO and the Value of F2 to FRF.

6. Click OK to close the Edit Tones/Max Harmonic number setup dialog. The Harmonic Balance Analysis, N-Tone setup should look like the following:

7. Click OK to close the Harmonic Balance Analysis, N-Tone setup dialog.

The final step in the setup is to configure the power sinusoidal sources in Port 1 with the analysis setups.

1. Right-click on Port 1, and select Edit Port from the menu.

2. On the Configure ports and sources dialog, click the Select button in the Analysis List column for PowerSinusoidal1. The Select Analysis dialog opens:

3. Both analyses are enabled by default. Click OK to close the Select Analysis dialog.

4. click the Select button in the Analysis List column for PowerSinusoidal2. Verify that this source is also enabled for both analyses.

5. Click OK to close the Configure ports and sources dialog.

6. On the Designer File menu, click Save.

Run the Analyses

To run both the transient analysis and the harmonic balance analysis, right-click on the Analysis folder and click Analyze from the menu. A progress window appears at the lower right to indicate that the analyses are being performed. When both analyses are completed, the Message Manager window at the lower left shows the name of the project, errors or warnings if any, and analysis statistics such as CPU time.

The final step is to display the results of the analyses.
