For ideal lossless elements, Rd = 0, therefore Q is infinitely large. In that sense, high-Q inductors tend to have lower loss and are preferred over low-Q ones. Practically, Q may be taken as constant over the frequency range of application. However Q may, as well, be a function of frequency. In these cases, Qo is specified at a certain frequency such as:
Q(f) is then defined as either proportional to frequency or the square root of frequency:
