Filter Design Tool > Designing an MCPL with Equal Line WidthsCombline, Interdigital and Hairpin type filters employ multiple coupled lines (MCPL). MCPLs are obtained by placing coupled lines in parallel inside a dielectric medium. The lines may or may not be equal in length due to impedance matching. In Filter Design Tool, all lines are assumed equally long. Filter Design Tool can calculate dimensions of MCPLs in stripline, microstrip, rectangular bar and round rod configurations. Depending on the type of medium, line spacings are found first and then line widths are iterated, or both dimensions are iterated together. You can also force the tool to use the same width for all lines. If you check Calculate with equal line widths, a line width is calculated from a filter reference impedance (TLine imp. Z1) and all lines will have this width. By specifying higher values for Z1, you can have thinner resonators, and you can get thicker resonators for low Z1 values. Line spacings will then be evaluated using coupling coefficients between shunt resonators in the equivalent electrical circuit. As compared to realization using unequal line widths, this method may produce less accurate results since flexibility of optimization is somewhat reduced by fixing line widths.
