Designing the Output Matching Network

For clarity, remove the input matching network by clicking the Clear button. Then add admittance grids, an Avail. Gain Ga (S-Plane) circle for 14.8 dB, and a Noise circle for 5 dB.

1. To find the appropriate starting point for the output matching network, use the Smith Tool’s Mapping function.

2. Click the Display tab, select Available Gain (SL) in the Mapping response list, type 14.8 in the Gain (dB) box, and then click Apply. Two mapping circles appear: one, the source-plane circle, atop the Avail. Gain Ga (S-Plane) circle, and another, the load-plane circle, in the upper right portion of the graph.

3. Use your mouse to move the source-plane marker to the point of tangency between the available gain and noise figure circles. Note that the load-plane marker tracks. Click at that point. An asterisk appears on the Smith chart—at approximately 1.26+j2.22. The complex conjugate of this normalized impedance, 1.26 j2.22, will serve as the starting point for the design of the output network.

4. To mark the chart with the complex conjugate of 1.26+j2.22, click the Conjugate button in the Marker Point group, and then click the asterisk at the 1.26+j2.22 point. A small circular marker appears at 1.26j2.22.

 

To develop the output matching network:

1. Select the Matching tab, and then click New Match.

2. Click Start Point, and then click the marker at 1.26j2.22.

3. Click the shunt capacitance button. An arc appears on the Smith chart to show the result of the impedance transformation the capacitor performs.

4. Drag the capacitor’s adjustment box to the R=1 grid. The Nominal Value box displays the value of this component as approximately 120 fF.

5. Click the series inductance button. Drag the inductor’s adjustment box to the Smith chart origin. The Nominal Value box displays the value of this component as approximately 10.7 nH. The output matching portion of your chart should look like this:

As before, you can generate the schematic of the completed output network by clicking the Export button. This adds the output network schematic to the project tree, and an unconnected two-port symbol for the network is placed in the upper left corner of the Amplifier schematic.
