           Create a Verilog Symbol

Create a Verilog Symbol

The first step is to create a schematic symbol to represent the Verilog component. A symbol consists of a graphic design with pins for the electrical nodes that connect the component to the circuit. In this example the Verilog symbol is a copy or “clone” of a Nexxim resistor symbol.

(Refer to Using the Symbol Editor in the Component Libraries topic for additional details on creating a new symbol.)

1. Start Ansoft Designer. Insert a new Circuit design. Select None in the Choose Layout Technology dialog.

2. In the top menu bar, select Tools>Edit Configured Libraries>Symbols. The Edit Libraries dialog opens with the Symbols tab. Make sure that both the Show Project definitions is checked (on) and the Show all libraries checkboxes in not checked (off).

3. Scroll to the symbol library file containing the symbol to be cloned. In our example, the file is Nexxim Circuit Elements/Nexxim_Symbols. Scroll to the symbol, nexx_res in our example. Left-click on that symbol to select it, and click Clone Symbol.

4. A Get Name dialog opens. Enter the name for the Verilog symbol, in this example nexx_Verilog_res.

5. Click OK to close the Get Name dialog. The new symbol appears in the Edit Libraries dialog listing as a Project symbol.

6. Click on the new symbol and click Edit Symbol. The Symbol Editor window opens with the resistor symbol displayed.

7. Click on the left terminal so that the properties of the terminal appear in the Properties window:

8. Click on the Value button for the PinName property to open the Global Port Name dialog. Rename the terminal to match the node name in the Verilog model. In this example, the terminal has been renamed to positive.

9. Select the other terminal and rename it. In our example the new name is negative.

10. In the top menu bar, select Symbol>Update Project. Close the Symbol Editor window.

11. In the top menu bar, select Tools>Edit Configured Libraries>Symbols. The Edit Libraries dialog opens with the Symbols tab. Make sure that the Show Project definitions is checked (on) and the Show all libraries is unchecked (off).

12. Scroll to the symbol you just created, in our example, nexx_res in the Project. Left-click on that symbol to select it, and click Export Symbol. The Export to user library dialog opens.

13. Designer saves user-defined objects in a PersonalLib directory that is specified at install time. To change the location of the PersonalLib directory, select Tools>Options>General Options.

By default, the PersonalLib directory is located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Ansoft . Use the Create New Folder icon at the upper right of the dialog to create a new folder named Verilog. Click on the new directory to open it, and then save the symbol in a new library file named Verilog_Symbols.aslb. Designer prompts you to verify the creation of the new library file.

14. In the top menu bar, select Tools>Configure Libraries. Select Personal Libraries and Symbols from the listing. Select the verilog directory and use the >> button to configuret the new symbol library for access from the Nexxim project:

Now that the symbol has been created, the next step is to create a component.
