Recommended Component Creation Process

Every component definition uses an associated bitmap (for the project tree icon) and a schematic symbol. Many components also require footprints, which in turn depend on material definitions and padstacks to characterize their physical presence in and electrical connections to a layout.

To save time in editing or creating new components, you should identify and modify, or create, if necessary its dependencies in the following order before you start defining your component. All of the dependencies listed may not be necessary for every component you create or modify:

1. Symbol

2. Material(s)

3. Padstack(s)

4. Footprint

Additionally, you may want to create a special project file using the required technology, and use Tools > Configure Libraries to limit library access only to one you need. Once components and their dependencies are created in this project, they can be exported to new, or existing libraries.

With all necessary dependencies completed and ready for use, you can open the Edit Component dialog box to define your component. See either of these topics:
