Purpose of the Job & Team Antenna design for GSM/UMTS/LTE/CDMA cellular phones
Scope of Responsibility
(# of whose work this person directs, guidance for decision making, accountability, coaching responsibilities)
The Senior Antenna Design Engineer is responsible for designing, simulating, testing and documenting the best solutions possible for antennas in high volume manufactured cell phones. The antennas to be designed can include multi-band 700/750/850/900/1800/1900/2100/2600 MHz (some combination of these bands and other bands) cellular (GSM/UMTS/LTE/CDMA) internal antennas, multi-band cellular MIMO and RX diversity antennas, GPS/Glonass antennas, WLAN 2.4 and 5 GHz antennas, BLUETOOTH antennas and NFC antennas. The designs are described in terms of suitable SAR, HAC RF emissions, TRP, TIS, envelope correlation coefficient, radiation pattern, return loss, antenna efficiency in actual usage conditions, and isolation between antennas. Performing trade-off studies is required between antenna performance, RF performance, mechanical constraints, and marketing requirements.
Typical constraints are small size of the phone, low costs and specific form factors.
All the work needs to be done with seamless teamwork. Some other stakeholders are mechanical engineering, PWB design, RF design, the antenna manufacturer, the field test crew, product marketing, and management of the project.
The Senior Antenna Design Engineer is also responsible for leading the antenna design for projects, managing the antenna design process for a project including schedules, providing antenna recommendations to the project, and advising the more junior members of antenna group.
In general, the senior antenna design engineer must have competence in the design of antennas for most of the protocols and parameters listed above.
Primary Tasks Jobs of the subordinates of the employee:
May work with antenna test technicians, who will perform measurements and help build antenna prototypes.
The employee is guided by:
Project Development Manager, more experienced antenna designers and Antenna Stream Leader
Typical decision making and problem solving situations in the job:
Performing trade-off studies between antenna performance, RF performance, mechanical constraints, and marketing requirements.
Nature of the responsibility:
Responsible for selecting an optimal antenna design, which meets all the requirements, or providing multiple antenna designs and the trade-offs amongst them. Responsible for leading antenna designs, managing the antenna design process for a project including schedules, providing antenna recommendations to the project, and advising the more junior members of antenna group.
Required Qualifications Minimum M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering or related degree/experience. Minimum 4 years of industry experience in practical design and testing of antennas or additional education in related field. Knowledge in Electromagnetics and Antenna Theory for small antennas in portable devices. Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical material properties of antenna subassemblies. Knowledge and experience with antenna simulation.
Desired Qualifications
Relationship with other functions All the work needs to be done as tight teamwork with mechanical engineering, RF design, the antenna manufacturer, the field test crew, product marketing, and management of the project. For successful work, good networking with other Nokia R&D centers and other information sources is necessary.
