HFSS and Planar EM Simulators > Multiple Ports on the Same FaceGap sources are similar to edge ports, but they are not connected to an extended transmission line, which becomes longer and more unstable at low frequencies. A gap source is excited directly at the port. Therefore, gap sources increase the problem’s accuracy at low frequencies. They also eliminate potential overlapping problems within the model. Input impedance is computed at the port edge as follows:
The dominant current pattern (mode) at the port is solved. A Y-matrix formulation is then calculated, from which the S-parameters are calculated. Only one port mode is allowed at a gap source. Use an edge port if there are one or more modes propagating on the port, such as on a coupled strip port. Use gap sources for microstrip, strip line, and CPW transmission line structures. Gap sources can be used in models that contain coaxial probe ports. Gap sources work well when the port is electrically close to a ground. They should also be used in structures that have high loss.
