HFSS and Planar EM Simulators > Ansoft Fast Solver Technology (MoM Fast Solve)Moment method (MoM)-based tools have always required long computation times and large amounts of computer memory. The MoM matrix solution-time typically increases by n3, where n is the number of unknowns, while the MoM matrix memory-requirement increases by n2. Green’s-function calculations and matrix-accumulation times are typically not limiting factors. For practical antenna array analysis, the rapid increase in solution time and memory requirement limits the size of an array that can be studied (to approximately 32 elements). Ansoft MoM Fast Solve technology enables the analysis of larger structures than were previously possible. Designer uses a new, proprietary algorithm to significantly reduce the memory needed to store and solve the MoM matrix. The algorithm analyzes the electromagnetic characteristics of the structure to determine the different levels of coupling between regions. In many cases, where electromagnetic interaction between regions is low, reduced-order coupling matrices can be employed to accurately capture the electromagnetic effects. The reduced-order coupling matrices save large amounts of memory compared to the full MoM coupling sub-matrices. In many cases, the memory requirements can be reduced by a factor of 15 or more compared to classical MoM methods. The matrix solution time can also be reduced by employing advanced preconditioning algorithms and iterative solvers on the reduced order MoM matrix.
