Transient Analysis Examples - S-Parameter Calculations: Waveguide Devices

General Description

 

Here the S-parameter calculation of a waveguide cross slot coupler is shown. The structure consists of two rectangular waveguides, rotated by 90 degree to each other. They are coupled by cross slot holes which are separated in each direction in space by lambda/4.

The definition of two voltage monitors enables the possibility to analyze the time dependency of the voltage inside the cross slots.

 

Structure Generation

 

The structure is modelled by defining a brick which is duplicated and rotated to obtain the second one. After this the cross slots are also defined by bricks and then added to the initially created bricks. Together with the PEC background material a waveguide cross slot coupler is modelled by this structure.

 

Solver Setup

 

In order to enable a transient calculation four waveguide ports are defined at each side of the two waveguides, working as the excitation sources. To examine the device over a broadband frequency range from 2.3 to 3 GHz the signal is determined as a Gaussian impulse.

The definition of an electric 3D field monitor at 2.7 GHz offers later the visualization of a monochromatic wave propagation. In addition, two voltage monitors are defined at the cross slots to monitor the voltage over the time.

 

Post Processing

 

Performing a transient calculation using waveguide ports the resulting time signals are converted automatically into the desired scattering parameters. All these results are listed in the navigation tree in the folder 1D Results and demonstrate the wave propagation of the coupler.

The results of the voltage monitors can be found in the 1D Results folder as well.

Furthermore the results of the electric field monitor are stored in the folder 2D/3D Results, where also the calculated port modes of the given waveguide ports can be examined.
