Transient Analysis Examples - S-Parameter Calculations: Coplanar Devices

General Description

 

This example is a four port coupler consisting of coplanar lines without ground plane.

Thus in the port regions two quasi TEM modes (even and odd) are able to propagate along the lines. Regarding the even mode within the operational frequency range, signals fed into Port one will be transferred to port four and three but not to port two. (Similar for the excitation of the other ports.)

 

Structure Generation

 

Although the structure looks quite complicated, the construction of the model is quite simple. It consists mainly of several bricks which are created as solid shapes and by using mirror and extrude operations.

General settings like units, background and boundaries are given by applying an appropriate project template for this kind of planar coupler. Here also some special mesh settings are defined.

 

Solver Setup

 

For the excitation of the coplanar lines, four waveguide ports are used. Some additional background material is added on the top of the structure to be able to neglect the influence of the boundary conditions (magnetic at every side) to the field solution.

 

Post Processing

 

The scattering parameters and the time signals can be accessed through the 1D Results folder in the navigation tree. The results there can also be selected during the simulation.
