Threedimensional Waveguide PathTransient Analysis Examples - S-Parameter Calculations: Waveguide Devices
General Description
Here the S-parameter calculation of a waveguide following a three-dimensional path is shown. The option Always exclude PEC regions reduces dramatically the number of cells and in consequence the simulation time needed for the S-parameter analysis of the waveguide.
Structure Generation
The structure is completely modelled by basic bricks and fundamental transformations. Identical parts are mirrored due to the symmetry of the structure.
Solver Setup
In order to prepare a transient calculation two waveguide ports are defined as excitation sources - one at each side of the waveguide device. To examine the device over a broadband frequency range from 17 to 25 GHz the signal is determined as a Gaussian pulse. The visualization of the monochromatic wave travelling through the structure for the lowest and highest frequency of interest is prepared by defining 3D monitors for the electric and magnetic fields. If the special setting Always exclude PEC regions in the mesh specials dialog is activated, only those field components are calculated, which are not located inside PEC regions. Therefore it is always advisable to activate this feature if large parts of the computational domain are filled with PEC material. In this example it was possible to reduce the simulation time by a factor of 2-3.
Post Processing
Performing a transient calculation using waveguide ports the resulting time signals are converted automatically into the desired scattering parameters. All these results are listed in the navigation tree in the folder 1D Results and demonstrate the frequency dependency of the S-parameters. Furthermore the results of the electric and magnetic field monitors are stored in the folder 2D/3D Results, where also the calculated port modes of the given waveguide ports can be examined.
