Using the Online Help System >
   Using the Search Tab

Using the Search Tab

The Search tab can help you conduct basic or advanced full-text search functionality:

•  Searches are not case-sensitive, so you can type your search in uppercase or lowercase characters.

•  You may search for any combination of letters (a-z) and numbers (0-9).

•  Punctuation marks such as the period, colon, semicolon, comma, and hyphen are ignored during a search.

•  Group the elements of your search using double quotes or parentheses to set apart each element. You cannot search for quotation marks.

•  To use full-text search, click the Search tab, and then type the word or phrase you want to find. Click List Topics, select the topic you want, and then click Display.

•  If you do a full-text search on the word "index", every topic that contains the word "index" will be listed.

•  To highlight all instances of a search word or phrase, click Options on the toolbar, and then click Search Highlight On. To turn off this option, click Options on the toolbar, and then click Search Highlight Off.

•  Advanced full-text search allows a user to search using boolean, wildcard, and nested expressions. The AND, OR, NOT, and NEAR operators enable you to precisely define your search by creating a relationship between search terms.

•  Nested expressions allow you to create complex searches for information. For example, "control AND ((active OR dde) NEAR window)" finds topics containing the word "control" along with the words "active" and "window" close together, or containing "control" along with the words "dde" and "window" close together.

•  If you are searching for a file name with an extension, you should group the entire string in double quotes ("filename.ext"). The default operation between terms is AND, so you will create the logical equivalent to "filename AND ext".

•  Use the hyperlinked “breadcrumb” trail at the top of each help page (see example below) to help contextualize a search and/or to jump between various hierarchical subsections.

•  Use the following search option check boxes at the bottom-left of the Search Tab window to help narrow and expand searches:

Search previous results allows you to conduct a second, more narrow search, by searching only the resulting subsections that were found in the most previous search.

Match similar words allows you to expand a search by looking for words that are similar to those for which you are searching.

Search titles only allows you to narrow a search by looking only among subsection titles.

Example

1. Type Alt-s or click the Search tab to open the search window.

2. Enter “subcircuit” in the search window below Type in the word(s) to search for:

3. Type Alt-L or hit Enter to begin the search. When the search is complete the titles of the pages containing the word(s) you searched for are displayed in the Select topic window. If desired, it is sometimes helpful to drag the vertical margin between the Title and Location headings to the right to reveal complete topic titles. You can now click on any of the subsection titles to display the subsection (or type Alt-D or click the Display button to display the first subsection listed. You may also click directly on the Title heading to alphabetize the titles displayed.

4. If desired, you can now type Alt-r or check the Search titles only box or the Search previous results box to repeat/narrow the search.

5. After changing the search text or checking the search boxes at the lower-left, next type Alt-L to begin the new search.

6. If desired, you can now type Alt-c or click the Contents tab to return to the table of contents in order to display the relative location of the page that is being displayed.

You can toggle back and forth between the Search and Contents tabs. You can also click one of the “breadcrumb” hyperlinks displayed at the top of the Topics window to jump to a different page, such as the following list shown above:

Designer File Formats >

Nexxim Netlist Format >

Subcircuits

Note

Each jump to a different page is reflected in the Contents window at left.
