Getting Started with Ansoft Designer > PC Memory Considerations
Increasing RAM on a 32-Bit PC Users with the appropriate Windows operating system (OS) can configure their PC to allow Designer to take advantage of all the installed RAM on a 32-bit PC — up to a limit of 3GB. Doing so requires setting up boot.ini to instruct the OS that 3 GB is to be used for application space, and 1 GB is to be used for the OS kernel and other related overhead. The boot.ini file is normally located at c:/boot.ini. It is a protected operating system file so you may need to un-hide boot.ini using the Windows Explorer Folder Options.
64-Bit PC Support When running on a 64-bit PC, the Designer PlanarEM and Nexxim solvers are able to access more memory to generate faster solutions. Designer automatically detects if it is resident on an enhanced PC with 64-bit capacity, and will configure the solver engines to access the extra memory that is available, thereby resulting in faster solutions.
